The challenge

A digital front door that no longer matched the city behind it

SAN is the busiest single-runway commercial airport in the United States, welcoming more than 26 million passengers a year. With New Terminal 1 Phase 1A opening in September 2025, the airport needed a digital experience worthy of its reputation as a premier Southern California gateway — and four problems stood in the way.

An outdated CMS

Routine content updates were nearly impossible for staff, leaving time-sensitive traveler information stale.

Fragmented properties

Three separate microsites — ambassadors.san.org, arts.san.org, and newt1.com — ran on inconsistent design systems, confusing visitors and splitting the brand.

Buried essentials

Convoluted information architecture hid flight status, parking, and security information under unnecessary content layers.

A mobile majority, underserved

With 70% of traffic on mobile devices, the experience lagged where travelers needed it most.

Our solution

One platform, every audience

Fruition delivered the project entirely in-house over eight months, from discovery on January 29, 2025 to launch on September 23, 2025, timed to the Terminal 1 grand opening with its 19 new gates, local dining, and new parking.

Replatform and consolidate

A custom WordPress build with 12 templates and 40+ content blocks replaced the legacy CMS. Three microsites folded into san.org, with role-based permissions and Azure AD single-sign-on putting content back in the hands of non-technical staff.

Put traveler tools front and center

Live flight data with watch-flight functionality, parking reservations, and enhanced dine-and-shop discovery moved from buried pages to the homepage, where travelers actually look. Security checkpoint wait times are integrated in the FlyFruition dashboard, with public-site display rolling out as checkpoint coverage completes.

Align the brand with the new terminal

An updated digital design system built on SAN's refreshed brand reflects the modern, vibrant character of America's Finest City and matches the physical transformation underway in the new Terminal 1.

Before You Go: trip planning in one step

The Before You Go widget helps travelers prepare with confidence. Select an airline, and the tool dynamically surfaces the correct terminal and available parking options — no page-hunting required.

By connecting airline data with parking availability and advance reservations, the widget reduces pre-travel uncertainty and helps passengers arrive prepared, park closer to their terminal, and move through the airport more smoothly.

Inclusive by design

Built for everyone, verified against the latest standards

SAN is committed to an inclusive digital experience for all visitors, including people with disabilities. The site was designed and developed from the ground up against WCAG 2.2 Levels A and AA and Section 508, then validated through automated scanning and hands-on testing across the assistive technologies real users depend on.

Fruition delivered a Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) among the final deliverables, with specialized verification subcontracted to AccessiBe.
