AI Overviews hit CTR hard, Meta goes subscription, Google pushes agentic commerce

The clearest datapoint of the week: Ahrefs measured a 23.1% CTR decline for the most exposed domains after AI Overviews launched in France, the first controlled before/after study since the July 22 rollout. Meanwhile Meta put a price tag on AI usage with Meta One, and Google used its Rethink event to push agentic commerce and holiday feed readiness. On the paid side, Google shipped new measurement capabilities across its data suite, and Semrush's survey found 65% of AI users have replaced product-related Google searches with chatbots, with 57.5% reporting chatbots talked them out of a purchase. The ASA also banned BrewDog Facebook ads, a reminder that paid social compliance risk is real. Recalculate your CTR baselines for AI Overview-exposed queries before Q4 reporting locks in, and if chatbot-assisted buying is now part of your funnel, your conversion attribution needs a pre-click layer.

Ahrefs: AI Overviews Cut CTR by 23.1% in France

Ahrefs tracked 963 domains in Search Console before and after France's July 22, 2026 AI Overviews launch: 28 days pre-launch versus 9 days after. The most exposed domains lost 23.1% of their CTR, the first controlled before/after measurement of an AIO market rollout.

Patrick's take

Build an exposure-weighted CTR model now: segment queries by AI Overview presence in Search Console and re-baseline forecasts before Q4. Europe-wide AIO expansion will make unadjusted YoY CTR comparisons misleading in every client deck.

Patrick's take

Feed quality is now the paid shopping lever that matters most with agentic surfaces in the path to purchase. Audit feed attributes, pricing accuracy, and enable cart transfer testing where eligible before holiday auctions peak.

Meta Launches Meta One Subscription Across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Meta AI

Meta launched Meta One, a subscription adding higher AI usage limits, enhanced expression features, and creator/business tools across its apps. Meta reports 50+ features shipped and 15 million subscriptions and trials to date, with the core app experience staying free.

Patrick's take

A paid tier for AI usage on Meta's apps signals future feature gating for business tooling. If your paid social or messaging programs depend on Meta AI features, model what premium-only capabilities would do to reach and cost in 2027 planning.

Walmart Expands Scintilla Data Platform With Marketplace Data and AI Features

At Walmart Data Ventures' Inspire conference, Walmart announced a major 2027 upgrade to Scintilla, its first-party data platform for merchants and suppliers, adding marketplace data and deeper AI features for suppliers.

Walmart
Patrick's take

Retail media data walls keep rising. If you sell into Walmart's ecosystem, plan reporting workflows around Scintilla's marketplace data now; suppliers with clean product data pipelines will extract more value than those scrambling at launch.

ASA Bans BrewDog Facebook Ads for Encouraging Excessive Drinking

The UK Advertising Standards Authority banned two paid Facebook posts promoting 'bottomless beer', ruling they were socially irresponsible and encouraged excessive alcohol consumption, a paid social enforcement action with category-specific compliance implications.

Facebook
Patrick's take

If you run regulated-category paid social, this is a compliance datapoint for creative review: promotion mechanics like unlimited offers are drawing regulator attention on Meta placements. Build category rules into creative QA before launch, not after the ASA email.
