In the U.S. alone, there are more than 61 million adults with a disability . The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that one in four people have a vision, movement, mental health, hearing or communication disability, which can affect their daily life in many ways, including inhibiting their use of technology. In order to allow those with a disability to effectively navigate your website, purchase a product or find useful information about your company or product, your website needs to accommodate different needs.
The American with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires certain standards when it comes to disability compliance, and you could be liable if your website doesn’t meet those standards.
Increase in ADA website-related lawsuits from 2017 to 2018 .
Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act (29 U.S.C. § 794d) requires that Federal agencies’ electronic and information technology is accessible to people with disabilities, including employees and members of the public.
To assist with your ADA compliance and in meeting 508 accessibility requirements, Fruition offers two levels of service that can facilitate progress in serving disabled site users.
The first accessibility compliance support option is Fruition’s in-house ADA compliance scan. With the use of visual and technology-based tools, Fruition will scan your website’s code and analyze visual elements to grade several levels of compliance with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). Alt tags, meta descriptions, HTML and more will be tested against WCAG compliance levels A, AA, and AAA. Approximately 40% of ADA compliance issues can be recognized with the Website Accessibility Scan option.
Once the Accessibility Scan is complete, Fruition will compile a list of found issues and will work with you to prioritize fixes.
To assess all areas of your site’s ADA compliance, Fruition also offers a Full Website Accessibility Audit. This extensive accessibility scan and audit includes: font and color compliance; navigation; tab indexes; meta data; and other aspects of your site that can only be recognized with live disabled-user testing. Fruition partners with a third-party to conduct this assessment.
Once the Full Website Accessibility Audit is complete, Fruition will compile a list of found issues and will work with you to prioritize fixes. The Full Website Accessibility Audit also includes a warranty and one year of quarterly auditing to help maintain WCAG compliance following site-launch.
