Google +1 Button and Social Search

As of today, Google’s +1 button is available for websites. What does this mean to you? We are encouraging SEO clients to add +1 (plus one) buttons to their sites, and here’s why. Google introduced +1  in March as an answer to Facebook’s Like button.  At the time, +1 was limited to search results – you could +1 your favorite search results to share them with your Google social network.  But with the release of the +1 button -think of the Google +1 button as a Facebook or Twitter Share button for Google – visitors to your site can +1 blog posts or pages to share with their networks.

The effects of +1 on search engine optimization are speculative at best, right now, but we’re encouraging our clients to embrace Google’s social sharing – it can’t hurt. Without a dedicated popular social network, Google’s currently relying on use of their own social tools to ramp up their social sharing. We think it’s a good idea to start building up your Google social network and +1ing the things you like on Facebook or share on Twitter.

Social sharing is taking off and having a direct impact on search engine results. Bing announced in October that Facebook likes would impact search results, and just last week they elaborated. Now, Bing includes the photos of up to three of your Facebook friends – or, your “trusted social network” –  who have Liked a link in search results. On top of that, Bing is elevating search results based on Likes in your network. But Bing isn’t stopping there – they also introduced the Collective IQ component of their social search. Because it’s possible that your network won’t be searching for the exact same things that you’re searching for, Bing is including information about aggregated Facebook data for popular sites and posts of the entire Facebook population, not just your trusted network of friends. And with this piece of information, it’s reasonable to assume that with more Likes from your site, you’ll rank higher on Bing’s search results pages. As search engines begin to include more and more social data in search results, you’ll see a bigger push from websites for users to start sharing pages and blog posts on their social networks.

How do you add the Google +1 button to your website? Google details the technical aspects of the self-serve form to add the button on their blog.  And after you add the button, you’ll have access to analytics and other data on button clicks from your site.
