Tips to Increase Your Twitter Marketing Value

Posted on March 1, 2011 • Written by Brad Anderson

Although many people who are not on Twitter regard it as a place for the silly and self-involved to share their lives with the world, those of us who know what Twitter is really about understand that it can be an extremely powerful marketing tool. And the value of Twitter as a way to boost your organic SEO has increased in the last few months since Yahoo! And Google both announced that their search engines crawl public Twitter feeds for links and content.

Twitter has lots of great ways to connect with people, but getting those followers can often be a problem and a hurdle. So a big question is always, how do I increase my followers? Well, here are a few suggestions that might help you boost that number.

1) Engage anyone and everyone on Twitter

If you are a Twitter power user, you probably already have Tweetdeck or a similar app constantly running on your desktop with multiple feeds based on keywords and phrases. Make sure you are following topics that are relevant to your business and start talking to people. Respond to general questions, and when someone RTs you, mentions you, or asks a questions, make sure you acknowledge it. Even if someone criticizes you, respond to them and offer your help. Often you’ll find that wrath will turn into respect once your critic knows you’re there to help them.

2) Get people connected easily on Twitter

If you haven’t already, make sure your Twitter and Facebook links are displayed prominently on your website. Make it easy for readers to share your blog posts by using big, easy-to-find buttons. If you make it easy for anyone on your website to share your content with the world, the more people will do it and follow you.

3) Create a Twitter community

You are probably not the only person in your organization that uses Twitter. So get everyone else involved. If other employees are not following your company Twitter, get them to follow, and enlist their help in RTing your content. As well, when you reach out and engage the Twitter community, you can build those relationships that will encourage your followers to share your awesome content with their followers. Get everyone involved and you’ll see your Twitter following increase immensely.

Of course, doing all these things is the whole point of increasing your SEO, so don’t lose sight of that goal. The goal of your Twitter marketing efforts is always to get more people to share links to your content and boost your standing in the online world. As you do this, you’ll get more site traffic and push toward the top of a Google search.
