The battle between Facebook and Google+ rages on, but in one category Facebook has seemed to be the clear winner, and that’s the use of wall posts.
At the outset, it seems that a downfall of Google+ was their failure to implement something akin to Facebook’s public “wall.” This feature, where users craft their social identity, is arguably one of the things that made Facebook so popular in the first place.
But don’t despair Google+ fans, public wall-like posts can be done, it’s just not quite as intuitive. The brilliance behind circles that you can not only specify groups of people with whom to share things, you can also replicate this feature with individuals. It’s this individual sharing that allows you to mimic Facebook’s wall functionality.
A wall post in Facebook is nothing more than sharing a link or a message with an individual. When it comes to Google+, the trick is to start in your sharing stream, not on an individual’s profile page.
Start by creating your message, video, photo or link in your stream. Then simply add the individual who’s “wall” you want to write on in the “share with” box. It will show up in your stream and your friend’s stream, but nowhere else, just like in Facebook.
There’s no need to create a circle with just one person in it; the receiver has the option to make the wall post public so others can see it and comment on it. To do this she or he can click on the “share” link directly under the post and select “Your circles” and/or “Extended Circles.” (There’s no option yet to make the post “Public” as there would be if you were the originator of the post.)
The really nice thing is how easy it is to write the same message on the walls of two or three people: you can just add those individuals in the “share with” box and make an impromptu circle. It’s like adding multiple to:’s on an email.
No doubt as Google+ becomes more widely adopted we’ll see more of these kinds of tricks being discovered. Enjoy using your Google+ “wall!”
