Here’s a quick example of the life cycle of keyword research and optimization. A few weeks ago I received a spam email that was typical – send me “your bank account number, a bunch of money, and I’ll send you a million dollars.” The only somewhat unique thing is it was targeting attorneys specifically. Unfortunately, even attorneys have fallen for this type of online scam before. I decided to post it to see (1) how quick it would rank for some of the random words in the email and (2) to see how much traffic it would generate. It bounced up to number 1 organic spot in ~12 hours. The email generated about 100 unique visits for the phone number that was listed in the email. It was a random international number so people would just grab it and search to see if it was legit. Of course it wasn’t. The first page they found in Google organic listing was the page I put up about it being a scam. So what’s the lesson here. I found a keyword I could rank high for, it generated traffic, but it generated 0 leads. Do your keyword research right and generate targeted traffic that generates solid leads for your business.
